Life in the UK Test

How to prepare for, book, and take the Life in the UK test, including study guidance and where to find official information.

Taking the Life in the UK Test

This course helps you get ready for the Life in the UK test.

The test has 24 questions about life in the UK, to pass the test you need to answer at least 18 questions correctly (75%), within 45 minutes. Questions come from all parts of this course, but you don’t need to remember people’s birth or death dates.
Each person gets a different set of questions during the test session. The test is usually in English, but you can ask to take it in Welsh or Scottish Gaelic.

You can only take the test at an approved Life in the UK test centre. There are over 30 centres in the UK.
You must book your test online at www.gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test.
Do not take the test anywhere else — only certificates from registered centres are accepted by the Home Office.
If you live on the Isle of Man or in the Channel Islands, the arrangements are different.

When booking, read all instructions carefully and enter your details correctly.
You must bring identification (ID) and proof of address to the test. Without these, you cannot take the test.

How to prepare for the test

This course contains everything you need to pass the test. Questions are based on the whole course, including this introduction, so study it all carefully. If you can read English at ESOL Entry Level 3 or above, you should manage the language easily.

Each page features a ‘Key Points’ section to guide you through the most important information. This section highlights key points to focus on, but knowing just these is not enough to pass.
You need to understand everything in the study section.

At the end of each page, you will also find a practice quiz. These small quizzes are a great way to review and check your understanding after studying each section. After completing the entire course, you should take as many full practice tests as possible to prepare for the real one.
